Shetland Flag Day Competition 2009

May 10th 2009

This year’s annual ‘Shetland Flag Day’ will be held on Sunday 21 June during the Johnsmas Foy. The Foy itself runs from Thursday 18 June to Sunday 28 June, and this year focuses on Shetland’s Viking Heritage as its central theme.

In recognition of Shetland Flag Day everyone will once again be encouraged to fly our flag across the county from as many suitable vantage points as possible, including buildings, vehicles, boats, flag poles – wherever - it’s your choice, and the more interesting or inventive the better.

This year, the Johnsmas Foy Committee intend to hold a photo competition to find the most interesting or unusual locations you have either flown the Shetland flag yourself or have seen it flown or displayed in some fashion. For instance this could be somewhere you have been on holiday, visited as part of a sporting or school trip, in front of a famous place or landmark, at the top of a mountain or even on a deep sea diving trip.

Of course this doesn’t necessarily have to be restricted to actual flags themselves. We would also welcome photos of other Shetland flag related displays – perhaps as part of a garden design, a painted vehicle, a t-shirt or other clothing, face or body painting – the possibilities are endless.

The best photos will then be displayed on the Johnsmas Foy website and the festival committee will ultimately decide on the winning entries.

Full details of the competition, competition rules and associated prizes can be found on the Shetland Flag Day Competition page of this website.

Send your photo's, by e-mail in JPEG format if possible, to davie.gardner@btinternet.com or nicola.halcrow@shetland.gov.uk

Let’s fly the flag for Shetland on the 21st June to celebrate this unique and very distinctive element of our cultural identity - and get those competition photos to us as soon as possible too please.
