Historic Lerwick Guided Walk

Thursday 18 - Sunday 28 June 2009 (except 20 and 25 June) @ 2.00pm

Meeting point: VisitShetland, Market Cross, Lerwick

Join local historian and registered tour guide Douglas Sinclair on a two-hour guided walk of old Lerwick.

Step back in time to the days of the smugglers, discover the history of the Old Tolbooth and then soak up the atmosphere, unique buildings and views of Lerwick's historic 'Sooth End'. Hear tales of the old closses, courts, Lodberries and also of notable Lerwegians who lived there. South End - Lerwick

Listen to stories, some of them extremely dark, of everyday life two centuries ago including tales of public disorder, tar-barrelling, murder, ghosts, smuggling and press gangs.  Wander through Lerwick's old streets and historic lanes and learn about the origins of their names and visit the town centre's dominating feature Fort Charlotte.

In keeping with our Viking theme this year, Douglas will also include Viking tales together with a visit to the Lerwick Up-Helly Aa galley shed.

Cost: £10.00

Note: These walks would make an ideal 'partner event' to Stepping into the Past - A talk on Shetland place names by Eileen Brooke-Freeman.
