'Hnefatafl' - A Viking board game
Monday 22 June @ 9.30am, 11.30am and 2.30pm
Where: Shetland Museum and Archives, Hay' Dock, Lerwick
Lay aside any thoughts of Monopoly, Scrabble or even latter day computer games and let the Johnsmas Foy's 'Hnefatafl' workshops transport you back to an earlier era of social recreation.
'Hnefatafl' is a Viking board game similar to chess, but much easier to learn and play. It is a game of strategy relating to attack and defence. The 'attacker' has 24 warriors and the 'defender' 12, while the moves are the same for both players.
Experts will guide you through the rules of the game, help you learn and understand the moves and finally oversee your first 'Hnefatafl' game / battle.
A prize of a 'Hnefatafl' board game will be presented at the conclusion of each workshop. The workshops will run for two hours each and there are three to choose from, or of course you can sign up for each one and make a whole day of it.
This is a free event but advance booking is preferrable.
