Lerwick Up Helly Aa Exhibition
Where: Galley Shed, St Sunniva Street, Lerwick
Visit the Lerwick galley shed to immerse yourself in all things relative to Lerwick's world famous Viking fire festival - Up Helly Aa.
Shetland's most high profile event takes place annually on the last Tuesday in January, but you can get an early taste of what it's all about thanks to this exhibition. On display will be a full-sized replica of the galley that is ceremonially burned on the night itself, together with Jarl squad suits from down the ages, shields, weapons, torches and photographs, together with a history of the event itself and a chance to meet some of the organisers.
From this exhibition you will get a real feel of the process leading up to, and including, the festival itself. All in all it's the nearest you can actually get to being there in person.
The Up Helly Aa exhibition runs from mid-May to mid-Sepember and is open:
Tuesdays - 2.00pm-4.00pm, 7.00pm-9.00pm / Fridays - 7.00pm-9.00pm / Saturdays - 2.00pm-4.00pm
Cost: Adults £3.00 / Concessions £1.00 / Under 5s: Free
