Mavis Grind Foy
Sunday 28 June (time tbc)
Where: Mavis Grind, Northmavine
Another Foy within a Foy, this one taking place in the north mainland of Shetland at Mavis Grind, the narrow istmus of land where the North Sea almost meets the Atlantic.
Mavis Grind is an area associated with much Viking related activity in the past, including being the location where it was believed that Norsemen could potentially have hauled their galley's across land in order to avoid the more perilous trip around the north tip of Shetland. (See film – Secrets of the Ancients for more information on this subject.)
Although no galley hauling is planned for this year's event, there never-the-less will be a replica galley on display, the locally built 'Maven Nord', together with accompanying Viking warriors.
Over and above this expect a day packed with entertaining activities for young and old alike, including a raft race, a tea's marquee, children's activities, a live music tent, a beer tent, craft stalls and a BBQ – and no doubt much much more besides.
